The BR-116/RJ (Rodovia Santos Dumont) section project was qualified in the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI) during the 2nd Meeting of the PPI Council, held on March 7th, 2017. This section is located in the region of the municipalities of Duque de Caxias (from the junction with BR-040/RJ), Magé, Guapimirim, Teresópolis, São José do Vale do Rio Preto and Sapucaia (going to the border with Minas Gerais, near the city of Além Paraíba).
Currently, the project, which has an extension of 142.5 km, is administered by the Rio-Teresópolis Concessionaire (CRT) and the current contract will expire in 2021. The average volume of vehicles is approximately 23 thousand per day, with a daily average of 40 occurrences, between medical and mechanical. The route has:
• 40.4 km of freeways, in the Baixada Fluminense;
• 14 km of single lanes, in the Serra dos Órgãos;
• 88 km of single lanes, between Teresópolis and Além Paraíba.
This Highway, as well as BR-040/MG/RJ and BR-116/RJ/SP, is strategic for the extent and volume of traffic. In this sense, they must be studied together in order to define the model that generates the highest asset value.
CRT is responsible for the operation of BR-116/RJ along seven municipalities of Rio de Janeiro up to the border with Minas Gerais. Part of BR-116/RJ is coincident with BR-493/RJ, highway known as the Metropolitan Arch of Rio de Janeiro.
The investments resulting from the new contract will result in the improvement of the service offered and technical aspects as: greater fluidity and reliability; improvements in the safety of cargo and passenger transport; in the reduction of occurrences of damages and accidents; and, consequently, in the optimization of travel time and logistic cost.
Importance: only route, from the city of Rio de Janeiro, to get around the Guanabara Bay, allowing access to the Lakes region, to the north of the State, and the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.
Currently, the project is in the preparation phase of the studies.
