Project Summary

The early renewal of the concession contract da Estrada de Ferro Carajás (EFC) was qualified in the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI) during the 2nd Meeting of the PPI Board, on March 7, 2017. The expected benefits from the extension of the current contract, for another 30 years, will be the obligation of investing in safety and increased capacity, which shall be agreed by the National Terrestrial Transportation Agency (ANTT).

The main goods handled in 2016, in thousands of useful tonnage, were:

• iron ore, 151.605;
• manganese, 1.600;
• pig iron, 845;
• fuel, 716;
• copper, 463.

The extension, which will end on June 30 of 2027, will also anticipate investments.

Most of the grants of this project can be directed towards investments of public interest, such as new investments in the network itself or in other interventions of the national railway network (cross investments). These improvements shall be the obligation of the concessionaire.

History - The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) obtained on 06/27/1997, under a new contract signed with the Federal Government, the concession to exploit the railway transportation services of cargo and passengers, provided by the Carajás Railway. The granting of this concession was established by the Presidential Decree of 06/27/1997, published in the Federal Official Gazette on 06/28/1997. The company continued to operate these services on 07/01/1997.
