The National Park of Aparados da Serra – NPAS (established by Federal Decree No. 47,446, of December 17, 1959, and later amended by Federal Decree No. 70,296, of March 17, 1972) and the National Park of Serra Geral - NPSG (created by Federal Decree No. 531, of May 20, 1992) are adjacent Conservation Units located between the Municipalities of Aparados da Serra (in the State of Rio Grande do Sul) and Praia Grande (in the State of Santa Catarina).
The NPAS has 13,141 hectares, while the NPSG has 17,301 hectares and a territory divided into Gleba Sul and Gleba Norte, positioned adjacent to the limits of NPAS, as a strategy to expand the area of the existing park. Both conservation units are under the responsibility of Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation - ICMBio and have common management (they share the same work team, advisory board, Management Plan and administrative facilities).
NPAS and NPSG were created to conserve characteristic formations of the South Region of Brazil, preserving the scenic beauty of the mosaic formed by the altitude fields with the araucaria forests and canyons, among others.
In relation to the current status of Public Use of NPAS and NPSG, these parks offer the visitor river baths, nature observation, trails and the possibility of taking walks in the Plateau and inside some of the canyons. The visitation centers of Itaimbezinho, Rio do Boi and Fortaleza stand out among the main attractions.
After the conclusion of the Assessments and the holding of a Public Consultation, the project is currently under analysis at the Brazilian Federal Court of Accounts (TCU).
