Chico Mendes Institute signs concession contracts of National Parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral

On August 12, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio)/Ministry of the Environment (MMA) signed with Construcap the concession contracts of the National Parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral. Supported by PPI, the concession process will allow investments estimated at BRL 260 million.

The project was carried out under the new MMA concession model, in which the concessionaire is responsible for revitalizing, modernizing, operating, and maintaining the parks, as well as providing support services to tourists, including food, parking, and security. With this, environmental agencies can focus on their primary mission, which is to protect the environment.

Located between the municipalities of Cambará do Sul (RS) and Praia Grande (SC), the parks of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral preserve fields and cliffs of Atlantic Forest that are home to purple-breasted parrots and ocelots. The canyon Itaimbezinho, one of the largest ones in the Americas, is one of the main attractions of the complex.

The concession of the two parks marks a diversification of the Federal Government's concessions agenda, contributing to environmental conservation under strict sustainability criteria. The development of ecotourism is part of the MMA's strategy for environmental conservation, aligned with the generation of employment and income.

The signing of the contract is the last stage of the concession process, which includes environmental impact studies, analyses by control agencies, public consultations, and other actions to strengthen transparency and guarantee the participation of society.

Besides Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, there are other 16 ongoing projects, in different stages in the concession process:
