Project Summary

This is the most important radio frequency auction ever held in Brazil, due to the amount of spectrum to be offered – four times the total currently available for mobile networks in the country – and the diversity of options, as the spectrum will be made available in four different frequency bands: 700 MHz; 2.3 GHz; 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz.

The 3.5 GHz is the main globally harmonized mid band for 5G and will be offered in two blocks of 100 MHz and one of 80 MHz (national level) and two blocks of 60 MHz (regional level), one being restricted to Small Service Providers (as defined by ANATEL – Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency) and new entrants in a first round.

5G technology is the foundation for industry 4.0 and massive IoT communication. Its possible applications range from communication between autonomous cars to the use of virtual reality for remote surgeries. This technology creates a new ecosystem of innovations for vertical industries, which allows for leaps in productivity and new production and service chains, functioning both as an instrument to leverage sectors ready to receive innovation as a dynamics for restructuring the market productive sector as a whole.

  • Project Current Situation

The Public Consultation period ended on April 17. Anatel received 244 contributions in its electronic system and 18 letters, totaling more than 1500 pages, which are being evaluated in order to improve the auction. The next step is the completion by Anatel of the Technical Pricing Assessment of the bidding object and commitments.
